A climbing frame out, the ground levelled, and striped turf laid with a sprinkler on.

New striped turf beneath a terrace with a fresh brick wall.

The ground goes back to bare, even soil before a single roll goes down.
A weedy lawn and old fences, turned into a sandstone patio, new turf and a new fence.

Area, and what is under the old lawn. Builders' rubble and compacted clay mean fresh topsoil before turf, or the lawn browns in the first dry spell.
Area is the start, but what is under the old lawn decides most of the rest. Turf needs the ground stripped, weeds out, the soil levelled and raked and, where builders have left compacted clay and rubble behind, fresh topsoil brought in, otherwise the new grass sits on a hard pan and browns in the first dry spell. Shape matters too: a lawn with curved edges, beds cut into it or a patio to finish against means more cutting and more waste than a plain rectangle. Then there is what has to go, from old turf and soil to a play area or a shed base, and how it gets out of the garden. Watering for the first weeks is what makes it knit, and we will say how often. A photo of the space and a rough size are enough for us to tell you which way we would go, and quotes are free.
Clay-rich soils swell when wet and shrink when dry. The British Geological Survey says swelling can lift structures and shrinking can cause uneven settlement or subsidence. Planting, hard pruning or removing trees and hedges, and changes to drainage, landscaping and paving can all add to the movement.

We lay rolled turf for new lawns: new-build plots left as compacted soil, long gardens stripped back and started again, and lawns where a play area or a shed used to be. The ground is stripped, levelled and prepared first so the turf knits in.
