Scaffold first, then what is under the tiles. Old roofs often have no felt and soft battens, so three slipped tiles can become a run of eaves.
On most roof jobs the first cost is getting up there safely, so scaffold or a tower is often a big share of a small repair, and it is the same scaffold whether one tile or twenty are replaced. After that, the price depends on what is found under the tiles. Older roofs were often laid without any felt at all, the battens rot where the tiles have let water in, and the timbers can be soft along the eaves, so a repair that looks like three slipped tiles can turn into a run of eaves stripped back and laid again. Size and pitch decide how long a re-roof takes and how many tiles are needed, and whether sound tiles can be kept and laid again or new ones bought makes a real difference. Ridges, hips, valleys and a chimney all add work, as does lead at every place the roof meets a wall. The old materials have to come off the roof and leave the site. Replacing a whole roof needs building regulations approval in most situations, which a straightforward repair often does not. A clear photo of the problem, from the ground if that is all you can get, helps us see what we are walking into.
Re-roofing a house usually does not need planning permission if it does not materially change how the outside of the house looks.

The Planning Portal says replacing a roof will need building regulations approval in most situations. Changing to a different material, such as slate to tiles, is likely to need approval for structural strength, fire safety and energy efficiency. Re-covering a roof should also include improving its insulation.

Roof and loft work can affect bats, which are a protected species. A survey may be needed, and if bats use the building, a licence may be needed.

We do pitched roofing: ridge and hip repointing, slipped and broken tiles, roof leaks found and fixed, roofs stripped and re-covered with new membrane and battens, chimney repairs and chimneys taken down, lead flashing, and uPVC fascias, soffits and guttering. A photo from the ground is fine.
